Biography
Joseph Nguyen (JCQ Nguyen) is primarily a self-taught painter from Weatherford, Texas. Although completing a successful career in engineering, Joseph always had an appetite for drawing. After excelling in school drawing classes, he taught himself to paint in high school and chose to keep up with his independent brushwork periodically even while his technical career took priority.
Now completely dedicating himself to his art, he explores a range of subjects with landscape his primary focus. Continuing to seek improvement, Joseph has sought instruction beginning in 2024 from Bruce Peil, Mark Boedges, Patrick Saunders, and Matt Smith, using their guidance to take his work to the next level.
In less than 2 years as a full-time artist, Joseph has been selected into the 41st Annual Bosque Art Classic 2026 and was noted by the Western Art Collector magazine as one of the rising stars in the exhibition.
‘For over three decades, my wife and I have traveled to Arizona and northern New Mexico to immerse ourselves in the landscape and the region’s rich art scene. During a trip to Taos in 2024, a serendipitous encounter and encouraging conversation with a local artist became a turning point for me. It was the moment my casual dabbling became a committed pursuit.
That experience led me to pursue daily painting and rigorous study. This disciplined focus directly shapes my current work. Of all the subjects I paint, I feel the strongest connection to landscapes. Painting landscapes allows me to recapture a memory of a place where I was lucky enough to catch a beautiful, fleeting moment. Ultimately, I strive to capture this sense of time and place and hope the viewer feels that same connection.’
