Andrea H. Hennings

Biography

“I was born in Koblenz, Germany in 1963, currently living and working in Greensboro, NC.
Drawing and painting has been my passion since early childhood. Animals – especially
horses – were the favorite subjects of my drawings and still are to this day. I am constantly
seeking to capture their essence. Mostly self-taught, but inspired and supported by my
likewise artistically talented father, I developed my realistic style, preferably expressed
through acrylic and oil on canvas or other media.

Rather than just capturing beauty, I try to find motifs that showcase a uniqueness in
composure and facial expression of an animal. To that end, whenever I am outside, I carry my
camera with me, as the right opportunity might present itself in situations least expected.
While I do sometimes work with commissioned pictures, using my own reference photos
allows me not only to retain the subject’s individuality, but include my personal impression.
Since I’m mostly drawn to their expression, their eyes or the moment, experimenting with
different media comes with the subject. Acrylic and oil are my preferred choices, but I love to
find other ways to deepen the impact ‘my’ animal has on the viewer. Moreover, drawing
sketches and therefore monochrome pictures have led me to use scratch boards or simply a
very reduced palette of colors to achieve my goal.

Although I love all creatures great and small, my heart belongs the horse, which were always
somewhere close to me my whole life. Looking in the eyes of a horse touches my soul and I
can feel a connection to theirs. Each one is special and unique and I will always be inspired to
paint equines.”
