Edna Harper

Biography

Edna Harper one of six daughters of a western NM ranch family in rural Catron County. There she absorbed the imagery of the west while she taught herself to draw and paint. As a young lady she was mentored by R. Brownell McGrew who was famous for his depiction of the Navajo Nation.

Edna has lived and worked on prominent ranches in western NM and worked in a family saddle shop incorporating her artistic talent into tooling leather. Edna also learned the art of Silversmithing from famed silversmith Frances Begay. Since then, for the past 30 years Edna has created many one- of- a- kind handmade pieces that her customers cherish.

She focuses a lot of attention to detail as seen in her paintings, drawings, and watercolors. She has shown in numerous art shows including the Mountain Oyster Show in Tucson AZ, George Phippin Show in Prescott AZ, the Rock Springs Ranch Show in Gallup NM, just to name a few and for the last 30 years the Cowboy Christmas Show during the National Finals Rodeo. She has also had her art featured on the cover of numerous magazines and has received major recognition and awards including the prestigious New Mexico “Rounders Award” in 2023 for her art portraying the western lifestyle. All her jewelry and art are signed with the Carrejo family brand bar E5 gifted to her by her father. Until recently Edna and her husband Mark have lived in Coyote, NM in Rio Arriba County, where they have an Outfitting business. Currently they live in Elephant Butte NM, but still return to Coyote for each hunting season.
