Biography
Nori Thorne loves to paint in the American Southwest where time and erosion reveal the bones of the earth and ancient artists left their marks in the remotest canyons. In her canyonscapes, she tries to capture the strong sense of place, of secrets suddenly revealed- a vista glimpsed through a Redrock window, a water pocket shining on slickrock, the cold walls of a slot canyon reflected in a black pool.
“The desert is a challenging place to work en plein air, sometimes requiring canyoneering skills, and always requiring endurance (once a midget faded rattlesnake slithered by my easel for a peek at my painting). I use pastels for their portability and because they enable me to quickly capture the changing light and shadow that play across canyon country.”
